Connecting Some Dots Into Useful Economic Information – Week 5

China Is Thirsty:

According to the Wall Street Journal in September, one of the major imports by China is bottled water. The Chinese demand for bottled water is driven by the fact that:

  1. About 25% of China’s formerly potable water is now polluted.
  2. As a result, China consumes about 20% of the bottled water produced in the world.
  3. One of the countries that has been most severely impacted by Chinese bottled water is New Zealand, which has started to restrict China’s bottling of New Zealand water.

How long can a country exist that needs to import something so basic to life as drinking water? Even more of a concern is when will China seize a neighbor to obtain water?

Our next blog series will examine the housing crisis (which is real), its origins, impacts and solutions.
